APPENDIX III Genes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

James R. Broach

Abstract

This Appendix provides information on identified and characterized yeast genes. The core of this information is presented in part A, which is an alphabetical listing of all gene designations, providing for each designation any former or alternate designations, the phenotype of a strain containing a mutation in that gene, the gene product (if known), the map position (if known), and an appropriate literature reference. In addition, the information in part A has been extracted and indexed in alternative formats in parts B and C.

Part B is an alphabetical listing of all gene products given in part A, providing each with the corresponding gene designation. Thus, one can readily find, for example, that the gene encoding phosphoglycerate mutase is designated GPM1. To determine the phenotype of strains lacking phosphoglycerate mutase, one can then refer to part A under GPM1.

In Part C, the genes listed in part A are grouped by common function. For convenience, a list of categories by which the genes are grouped is provided on the first page of part C. The genes involved in each category follow. The listings are not exclusive; a particular gene may appear in several categories.

There are four sources of information provided in this Appendix. The authors of the various chapters have been of prime importance. Thus, much of the information has been extracted directly from individual chapters. Our second source was responses from a mass mailing to the yeast community, conducted in the Spring of 1980, in which we requested...
